The "America's Best Restroom" contest finalists have just been announced for 2011 and these unique toilets all have interesting stories. The annual contest, in its 10th year, is run by Cintas and includes ten restrooms chosen from across the United States. They choose the finalists that impress them the most which leaves it open for a lot of different types of restrooms to be highlighted by the competition. The final ten seems to be a combination of clean, impressive or interesting in some way, and as Cintas says, memorable. It also must be open to the public and the winner will be announced in September.
Interesting finalists this year include a restroom that has parts of the Berlin wall holding up the urinals in the Men's room inside a casino in Las Vegas. It is a real, graffiti-covered piece of the wall that once separated East and West Berlin in Germany. These historically important pieces of concrete can now be viewed not in a museum, but in the main part of the Main Street Station Casino in Las Vegas.
The Field Museum in Chicago has 2 large restrooms on its ground floor to accommodate incoming visitors including a nursing room, a "Tot Area" with smaller toilets for children, and other amenities to make for a really family-friendly atmosphere. Castello di Amorosa Winery in Calistoga, California has hand painted Italian style frescoes with unique materials imported from the "Old World" in Tuscany, Italy. Habana Outpost in New York has super cool, eco-friendly toilets that flush using a rainwater collection system designed by students at a local architecture university.
Another finalist is a "regal restroom trailer" made for President Obama's 2009 Inauguration. A dual audio system with an externally mounted flat screen, granite counters and floors, and black marble walls will impress even the Commander in Chief. Climate controls keep it cool or warm it up to your liking but best of all, it is a trailer so it is completely portable. Many people's houses don't have bathrooms this nice, and it can be found in Chantilly, VA at Don's Johns Inc.
The Joule Poule at the Joule Dallas Hotel in Dallas, Texas has a beautiful outdoor shower on the roof of the hotel with mosaic tiles featuring contemporary art with wood paneling. Ninja New York has high tech toilets that include a control pad which brings seat warmers, water spray, a deodorizer, and a blow dryer to your restroom experience. Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel is another Virginia entrant (the other being Don's Johns) and features orange-gold silhouettes of birds flying off into the sunset. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in Arizona has gorgeous terrazzo flooring, glass tile walls and large stainless steel stalls along with lighting that can change from blue and green colors to gold and red colors depending on the event or ocassion. Snowbasin Resort in Huntsville, Utah features beautiful Italian marble, bronze and crystal made chandeliers, floor to ceiling commodes, inlaid African Anegre wood and hand-painted walls.
